A teaching approach built on world-class foundations

My teaching methods are heavily influenced by the styles I’ve learned from my own teachers — especially Bob Armstrong, who is widely regarded as one of the great master educators. The way I teach technique, control, and musicianship comes directly from those foundations — so students build real skill that lasts, not just “copying beats”.

Studio Culture & Approach

Milton Keynes Drum Academy is a place of encouragement, consistency, and steady growth. Lessons are designed to be something students look forward to each week — focused, enjoyable, and supportive, without pressure or judgement.

Progress comes from a consistent weekly routine, supported by regular practice between sessions. This doesn’t require perfection or long hours — even short, focused practice makes a real difference. Effort, curiosity, and consistency matter far more than talent.

Questions are always welcome. Trying things, making mistakes, and exploring ideas are all part of the learning process. The aim is to build confidence, strong fundamentals, and long-term enjoyment of playing music.

Practice & Progress Expectations

Lessons work best when students treat them as a weekly commitment, not just a once-a-week check-in. Students who engage consistently — both in lessons and between them — tend to see far better progress and enjoyment from their playing.

Everyone progresses at a different pace, and lessons are always tailored to the individual, but regular engagement is key to developing solid technique, timing, coordination, and musical confidence.

Practice Tasks & Lesson Follow-Up

At the end of each lesson, clear practice tasks are set to work on before the next session. These are shared via WhatsApp so students have something clear and practical to refer back to.

Students are welcome to record themselves practising and send one short video or audio clip per week for feedback and guidance. This is intended to support steady progress between lessons; additional feedback beyond this would need to be arranged separately.

Lesson Bookings & Payments

Lessons are booked as a weekly slot and are paid monthly in advance, with payments taken on the 1st of each month, to secure that time.

Trial lessons can be scheduled at any time during the month.
After the first lesson, if a student decides to continue, the initial payment is pro rata to cover the remaining lessons in that month. From the following month, lessons move onto the standard monthly payment cycle.

If a student needs to miss a session, that’s absolutely fine; however, missed lessons are non-refundable, as the slot is still held. This includes planned absences such as holidays or work commitments. Where possible, a catch-up lesson may be offered if availability allows, but this can’t be guaranteed.

If lessons are paused for a full month or more, the weekly slot is released unless payment continues, and therefore cannot be guaranteed on return.

If I need to cancel a lesson due to illness, an emergency, or a prior professional commitment, I’ll always give as much notice as possible. The lesson will be rescheduled for that week, where possible, or credited to the following month.
