About Me

Hi, I’m Matt — founder and drum teacher at The Milton Keynes Drum Academy. Discover my journey, influences, and teaching philosophy. Learn how I can help you become a confident and skilled drummer.

My drumming journey

I started playing drums at the age of nine, and from that very first moment behind the kit I was completely hooked. By thirteen I was already playing professionally, learning fast by being around musicians who were far more experienced than me and soaking up everything I could.

From a young age, I was fortunate to be influenced and inspired by drummers such as Jamie Morrison (Stereophonics) and Alex Reeves (Elbow). Watching, listening to, and learning from players of that calibre had a huge impact on how I approach drumming — not just in terms of technique, but musically, creatively, and professionally. They helped shape my understanding of groove, feel, and what it really means to serve the song.

Over the years, that foundation led me into a wide and varied professional career. I’ve performed in West End theatre productions, travelled internationally with theatre groups, and toured extensively as a live drummer. Along the way I’ve had the opportunity to support and share stages with artists including The Darkness, Mallory Knox, Young Guns, and even Shakin’ Stevens — experiences that taught me discipline, consistency, and how to perform under pressure night after night.

Influenced by the best

Alongside my performing career, I’ve been incredibly fortunate to study with some outstanding teachers who helped refine my playing and deepen my understanding of the instrument. My drum teachers include Bob Armstrong, Ash Soan, Craig Blundell, and Steve White — each of whom brought something different to my playing, from feel and musicality to technical control and professionalism. Their influence still shapes how I play and, importantly, how I teach.

Teaching has always been a natural extension of my playing life. I’ve been teaching drums for many years now, working with children, teenagers, and adults of all abilities — from complete beginners to experienced players looking to push themselves further. I understand that everyone learns differently, so lessons are always tailored to the individual. Some students want structure and grades, others want to play their favourite songs, and some just want to enjoy drumming as a creative outlet — all of that is absolutely fine.

Extensive experience

At The Milton Keynes Drum Academy, my focus is on building strong fundamentals, confidence, good technique, and a genuine love for the instrument. I believe learning should be challenging, rewarding, and enjoyable — never intimidating. Whether you’re picking up sticks for the first time or looking to sharpen your skills, my aim is to help you become the best drummer you can be, at your own pace.

"My teaching style is calm, patient, and encouraging, but always focused on helping students build real skill, confidence, and musical understanding — not just copying beats."
